Are messy houses fun play areas for cats or do they find them unpleasant? In this article we explore the question, “do cats like mess?”

All cats are different. Some cats enjoy mess or clutter to explore, play and hide in while others prefer big, clear open spaces to run around in. Many cats enjoy a combination of the two.

Cats are very hygienic animals by nature, though, so most cats will not like unclean, dirty and soiled environments.

Dirty versus messy environments

When we talk about mess, we could mean a variety of things. Mess could mean clutter i.e. an untidy collection of things. Clutter isn’t necessarily dirty or unhygienic (although it certainly can be).

Dirty environments are those that are unclean and unhygienic. These are the types of environments that can easily make humans and their pets ill.

Do cats like dirty environments?

Generally speaking, cats do not like dirty, unclean, soiled and unhygienic environments and will often avoid them. For example, if you don’t keep your cats’ litter trays clean, they may choose to go to the toilet elsewhere or display other forms of frustration and protest.

Do cats like cluttered environments?

Some cats enjoy cluttered environments because they give them areas to explore, play and hide in. Think of some often cluttered spaces like underneath beds, in cupboards, closets and wardrobes – we often find our furry friends exploring, playing or relaxing in these spaces.

There are many objects within piles of clutter that cats will play with as toys.

Cats may also enjoy the likes of piles of worn clothes or bedding because they smell of their beloved humans.

All cats are different, though, and some cats dislike cluttered environments and avoid them, become stressed or take up a form of protest.

Put your cat’s safety first

The dangers of clutter to your cat

If you’re wondering if your cat likes mess because you’re a messy person, the first thing to consider is your furry friend’s health and safety. Regardless of your pet’s preferences, a messy environment can be a dangerous one if you’re not careful.

For example, if you have heaps of clutter, it’s easy for sharp objects that could injure your cat to be concealed within your stuff. Also, large collections and stacks of things can be prone to falling over. Ensure you don’t have clutter that could easily topple and fall on or trap your cat.

The dangers of a dirty environment to your cat

Dirty environments are rife with the likes of bacteria, mould, dust and toxic substances which can be harmful to both cats and humans. An unclean environment puts your cat at risk to the likes of an upset stomach, rashes, allergies, breathing problems, poisoning and more.

We recommend keeping your shared living spaces clean.

Why cats enjoy tidy spaces

Whilst some cats have fun in clutter, many cats enjoy tidy spaces. This is partially because tidy places are usually clean places and we know that most cats are instinctively clean animals.

Clean and tidy spaces also provide a good area for cats to play in. They’re free to run around and throw toys about in a tidy space.

Do cats like mess? – Final thoughts

As all animal lovers know, our pets all have their own personalities, preferences and quirks. Some cats are okay with, or even enjoy, mess whereas others cannot stand it. Your cats’ behaviours will give you the best indications of their preferences.

Your cat’s health and safety is paramount. Whatever your cat’s environment, do your best to keep your furry friend out of the dangers of illness and injury. Maintaining a clean environment that doesn’t have dangerous objects in it plays a key part in this.

As always, if you’re concerned about your cat’s behaviour or health, please contact a qualified veterinarian.
